I was going through one of my black art portfolios where I keep some of my watercolors, when I came across the beginnings of this painting. I'm not sure how long ago or why I put it in my portfolio to begin with, unless I thought someday I would finish it. Well, that day was today. I could have left the painting as it was, without a background, but as I looked at this image, I couldn't help but be fascinated more and more by the image of this woman and felt she needed more. I began to paint the background in blue, and as I continued working on the painting, my application of paint became darker and darker until the resulting painting. It was quite unexpected, this painting, but there it was in my art portfolio waiting to be completed. It was quite out of the blue how I ran into it.
